2012 Essay Contest: Celebrating Black History Month
Labelle Neighbors Who Care with Franciscan University of Steubenville and Historic Fort
Steuben is sponsoring an essay contest. The theme is Who is your Black contemporary
hero or “she”ro? This contest is open to all students in grades first through twelfth.
Students are to write about a present day Black man or woman who, in the author's opinion,
has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act or is regarded as a role model.
Guidelines for contest:
Students 1st through 4th grade: One paragraph, a minimum of 5 sentences, either neatly
handwritten or typed, single spaced, with a 12 point font.
Students 5th through 8th grade: 250 words, typed, single spaced, with a 12 point font.
Students 9th through 12th grade: 500 words, typed single spaced, with a 12 point font.
Entries are judged on originality 20%, grammar 30%, relevancy to theme 30% and effective
expression 20%. Only one entry per student.
One prize will be awarded per grade.
1st through 4th grade, $25.00
5th through 8th grade, $50.00
9th through 12th grade $100.00
Winners will be announced at The Black History Month Film Festival, Saturday, February
18th 2012, at the Historic Fort Steuben, 120 South 3rd. St, Steubenville. The winning essays
will be read and prizes will be awarded. This event is free and open to the public.
