HISTORIC FORT STEUBEN FEBRUARY UPDATE

Less than two months until spring! Of course, there will be snow and ice and chilly winds in the
days ahead, but warmer days are coming! Until then, why not stop by the Fort Steuben Visitor
Center to get our 2012 Events Calendar, look at our current exhibit, pick up some travel
brochures and browse the Museum Shop? If nothing else, have a chat with our friendly
receptionist; there’s always something interesting going on here!

IN MEMORIAM
All of the community has been saddened by the death of Bill Croskey. Bill was a veteran
teacher, a Steubenville supporter, and a walking almanac of community history. A long-time
trustee of the First Federal Land Office and a member of many boards, including the Old Fort
Steuben Project, Bill livened up our meetings and made history come alive for many young
people. He will be greatly missed.

CIVIL WAR: THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
As part of the commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, we have dedicated our
Black History Month exhibit to the experiences of the African American men and women who lived
through that turbulent time. From the United States Colored Troops (including those who won the
Medal of Honor) to the spies (like Harriet Tubman) to the “Contrabands” (slaves who were freed
by the Union army), an important part of our national history will be on display from
Feb. 6-24. A
new movie, Dog Jack, will be available for viewing. Thank you to the Steubenville Herald Star for
helping to sponsor this year’s exhibit.
  On
Saturday, Feb. 18, from 11 am to 5 pm, the Black History Month Film Festival will feature
short movies about the achievements of black men and women in American history.
Refreshments will be provided in part by Eat n’Park.
  An
essay contest sponsored by the Labelle Neighbors Who Care and Franciscan University
of Steubenville will also be part of this year’s event. Cash prizes will be awarded and winners will
be announced at the Film Festival. Check our website or Facebook page for more information.
All these programs are free and open to the public.

SUPER-DUPER FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER RAFFLE
Sales of our 2012 raffle tickets are underway so be sure to buy some! We have a super

twelve prizes including overnight stays at Seven Springs Resort and Mountaineer
Resort, a Lyman’s Great Plains Hunter Flintlock, and a Sweetheart Oak Rocker. Tickets are

2012 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
We are 75% of the way towards our membership goal for this year – but we hope to surpass it.
If you like what we are doing at Historic Fort Steuben, please show your support by becoming a
member. Many volunteers contribute time and effort, but we still need dollars to pay the bills.
Your tax-deductible donations keep us going! A membership form can be found on-line; you can
even make your membership donation on-line securely through PayPal at
www.oldfortsteuben.

Suzanne Kresser of Tri-State Financial have a number of easy ways you can ensure that the
work we have begun here will continue to future generations.

SPRING QUILT SHOW
Calling all quilters! Our very popular Spring Quilt Show will be held from April 16-28 and is open
to all. Whether it is one of your own machine stitched designs or a well-loved quilt handed down
from Grandma, every one is a unique creation which can be entered in our show. A Quilt Display
Form will be on our website (
www.oldfortsteuben.com/QuiltDisplayForm ); by filling it out and
sending it ahead of time, we can prepare the program and the room.  Or you can pick one up at
the Visitor Center.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
The schedule for the 2012 Summer Concert Series which will run from
May 24 to August 2 is
almost complete! This year we will be giving attendees a free
Keepsake Souvenir Program
that will provide information about all the artists who will be performing. It will be suitable for
autographs as well as reviving memories of these great evenings of music and socializing.
Since 2007, from 300-1000 people come to Historic Downtown Steubenville each week to enjoy
these riverside events. We are grateful for their support and appreciation.
Sponsors and advertisers are invited to place an ad in the program booklet. Ads will range from
$250 to $500; sponsorship of one concert is $1500. For more information, call us at 740-283-
1787.
