HISTORIC FORT STEUBEN
JANUARY UPDATE
It’s a new year with new hopes and challenges! Our goal this year is to increase attendance at
Historic Fort Steuben, increase membership, and increase programs that enrich the lives of our
visitors. With the wonderful support of our friends and community, we expect to see good things
happening in 2012!
2012 SUPER-DUPER FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER RAFFLE
To ensure that our 2012 Festival will offer entertainment, history, and fun for the whole family, we are
selling raffle tickets for a special collection of prizes. There will be 12 winning tickets drawn; the first
winner will have the first choice of prizes, the second will have second choice, and so on. We thank the
Steubenville Herald Star, Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort, and Frank & Jerry’s Furniture
for donating most of the prizes:
1 Lyman’s Great Plains Hunter Flintlock
1 Overnight w. Breakfast Buffet/7 Springs Resort
1 Overnight w. Dinner at La Bonne Ville at Mountaineer Resort
1 Appalachian Sweetheart Oak Rocker
8 Overnight lodging at Mountaineer Resort
Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the Visitor Center, by mail or by phone. The drawing
will be held at our Annual Dinner on May 23rd, but you do not have to be present to win. All proceeds
will go to supporting Ohio Valley Frontier Days, June 23-24.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROGRAM
This year’s Black History Month program, Feb. 6-24, will be part of the national commemoration of
the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Entitled, The Civil War: The African American Experience,
the program will feature an exhibit on the people and events of the period, particularly how the event
affected and was affected by Ohioans. On Saturday, February 18, there will be an African American
Film Festival focusing on achievements of black men and women in American history. These programs
are free and open to the public. For more information call 740-283-1787.
KING CONFERENCE ROOM RENTALS
The King Conference Room has been upgraded with a wall-mounted 55” HD TV that can be used for
PowerPoint presentations, videos and DVD’s. (Special thanks to Jerry Barilla for donating and
mounting the TV.) The meeting room can hold up to 45 people and is suitable for light refreshments. A
donation of $50 to use the room is requested. For more information call 740-283-1787.
2012 MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
Historical sites such as ours are dependent on memberships to maintain operations. We are
pleased that we have reached 2/3 of our goal for 2012, but we still have a way to go. If you haven’t yet
sent in your membership donation, please do so. You can now make your payment via PayPal on our
website, www.oldfortsteuben.com. If you would like to make a donation in addition to your membership,
you may do so there as well. Members receive our monthly email updates, our newsletter, and a 10%
discount in the Museum Shop. But even more, members receive the satisfaction of knowing that this
resource for the community will continue to present high quality programs and that the future will have
the opportunity to learn from the past.
MEMORIAL BRICKS
Engraved bricks of 3 lines can be purchased to honor a friend or family member, commemorate an
event, or memorialize a special moment or group. Bricks ordered in the next 2 months will be put in
place by the fountain in May. If you want to make it a gift, we would be glad to send a card announcing
it to the recipient. Brick forms can be obtained at the Visitor Center or from our website, http://www.
oldfortsteuben.com/Brickform.html.
SPONSOR A DAY
It costs about $200 a day for the general operations at Historic Fort Steuben. You or your
organization can be a sponsor by covering the costs of a whole or half day of your choice. Your
donation would be acknowledged by a certificate on display in the Visitor Center as well as through our
email updates. For more information, contact us at info@oldfortsteuben.com or 740-283-1787.
NEW ADDITION
Long-time member Ed sheets is the donor of the many beautiful prints of Native Americans and
Frontiersmen on display in the Visitor Center. His latest contribution is a unique set of Hudson Bay
trade beads he obtained at auction. These will be another fine addition to our display on Native
American culture.
COMCAST NEWSMAKERS
Look for Director Judy Bratten on Comcast Newsmakers, January 1-28. Comcast provides a free
forum for non-profit organizations and community leaders as well as local, State and Federal officials to
present events and issues important to the Ohio Valley Region. Comcast Newsmakers can be seen at :
25 and :55 minutes past the hour on CNN Headline News on Comcast Cable.
FORT STEUBEN ON FACEBOOK
Be sure to check out our Facebook page – Historic Fort Steuben - to see the latest on what is
happening here. We will also be working on the website and Facebook page of Visit Steubenville as we
take over the responsibilities of the Steubenville CVB. The next few months will be transitional as we
build on what Beth Wood and the Board of the CVB has established. Please be patient as we adapt to
these new duties.
If you are one of those who make New Year’s resolutions, I hope one of them will be to visit us this
year. We look forward to seeing you!
