WHAT'S HAPPENING AT HISTORIC FORT STEUBEN
MAY 2008
* The JPMorgan Chase Summer Concert Series will open on May 29th
with a Country Music Night. Performers include Joe Zelek, Sarah
Marince, and Lonesome Heart Bluegrass. We are grateful to our many
sponsors and for a grant from Ohio River Border Initiative, a joint project
of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
* The fountain has been turned on for the 2008 season. Memorial bricks
will be added this month as well.
* The annual Membership Dinner will be held on May 21st in the Visitor
Center. The guest speaker will be Prof. Tim Anderson of Ohio University
who will speak on settlement patterns in the Northwest Territory, with
particular emphasis on the Seven Ranges. Tickets are $25/person.
APRIL 2008
*Board President Jerry Barilla and Director Judy Bratten met with local
state representatives in Columbus as part of the Governor's Arts Day.
* Historic Fort Steuben has been given an extensive collection of 18th
century frontier and Native American tools. They will be housed and
placed on exhibit in one of our blockhouses in the coming months.
* Historic Fort Steuben hosted a weekend workshop for Leadership
Ohio.
* The De-He-Wa-Mis Chapter of Questers donated $1500 from a grant
received from the Esther Simmons Charitable Trust towards completing
the exhibit and display in the Commissary.
MARCH 2008
* To celebrate our history and honor Women's History Month,
Historic Fort Steuben and the Jefferson County Historical Association
present an exhibit of THE ALL-AMERICAN QUILT. Handmade
quilts will be on display as well as information on the history of
quilting. The exhibit will run from March 17-April 18, Monday through
Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. Tea and Quilts, a special program with a
presentation by Mary Scott, will be held on April 10 at 2:00 pm.

* First Lady of Ohio, Frances Strickland, will be present for the
unveiling of the National Geographic Driving Maps on Saturday,
March 29th at 10:00 as part of the Spotlight on Appalachian Ohio
Travel Show at the Fort Steuben Mall. The day will also feature
entertainment from Bill Schilling, Jerome James, Roz & Lynn, the
Tri-State Harmonizers and "Dean Martin" (aka Rich Treglia) as well
as food and craft demonstrations and storytelling. Historic Fort
Steuben will have a booth as well.
FEBRUARY 2008
* The Black History Month Exhibit: African Americans in the
Military is on display and has been well-received. Fifth graders
from Buena Vista Elementary School will be visiting the
exhibit and participating in games and activities as part of the
program.
* Historic Fort Steuben was featured in the Feb. 11th Pride and
Progress section of the Steubenville Herald Star. The article
highlights the events of the past year and the plans for the
future.
* In conjunction with the Jefferson County Historical
Association, Historic Fort Steuben will host an exhibit on "The
All-American Quilt" from March 17-April 18.
* The Spotlight on Appalachian Ohio Travel Show will be held
at the Fort Steuben Mall on March 28-29. Historic Fort Steuben
has been involved in the planning and will have a booth at the
show. Be sure to stop by and visit.
JANUARY 2008
* Planning is underway for the Black History Month Exhibit
featuring African Americans in the Military which will run from
Feb. 4-29 in the Fort Steuben Visitor Center
* The recently published books on local history, Greetings from
Steubenville and Ghost Rails III, are available in the Fort
Steuben Museum Shop which is open Monday through Friday,
from 10-4.
* The Summer Concert Series committee is meeting to
schedule the free concerts for the 2008 season.
JPMorgan-Chase will be a major sponsor of the series.
