OLD FORT STEUBEN PROJECT ANNOUNCES BARON VON STEUBEN STATUE FOR FORT STEUBEN PARK
STEUBENVILLE — The Old Fort Steuben Project has announced plans for a major new addition to Fort Steuben Park with the creation and installation of a bronze statue honoring Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Revolutionary War hero for whom both Fort Steuben and the City of Steubenville were named.
The project comes at a meaningful moment as the nation celebrates America’s 250th anniversary. Organizers say the statue will serve as a lasting tribute to Baron von Steuben’s critical contributions to the American Revolution and to the historical roots of the community that bears his name.
A generous donor has committed funding for the majority of the project, making it possible for the Old Fort Steuben Project to move forward with the effort. The statue will be designed and cast by sculptor Erik Christianson under the guidance of master sculptor Jerry McKenna of Jerry McKenna Sculpture Studios, LLC. McKenna is widely recognized for numerous acclaimed public works, including the Calvin Jones statue at Harding Stadium and many prominent sculptures on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
“We are excited to bring this important project to Fort Steuben Park,” said Paul Zuros, Executive Director of the Old Fort Steuben Project. “Baron von Steuben played a vital role in shaping America’s fight for independence, and it is fitting that the city and fort that carry his name recognize his legacy in a permanent and meaningful way”
