Do you think you know about our nation's founding document? Here's a quick quiz:
What are the three branches of government as outlined in the Constitution?
Which branch of government makes the laws?
Which branch of the government has the power to enforce the Constitution?
Which section of the Constitution lists the 6 purposes of the Constitution?
What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution?
How many amendments are in the Constitution today?
For some of us, this is pretty easy. But most of us haven't had to think much about the Constitution since school days. But this document has formed who we are as a nation and should be understood by all citizens, especially during election years.
To encourage that knowledge, Historic Fort Steuben presents an annual exhibit, Celebrate the Constitution, that highlights the signers, the details, and the history of America’s founding document, which is commemorated every year on September 17, Constitution Day. Included in the exhibit is The Bill of Rights & You, created by the National Archives Traveling Exhibits Service and the video A More Perfect Union depicting the often-raucous debates of the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
The exhibit also offers visitors the opportunity to sign a replica of the Constitution, receive a free pocket Constitution, and take a “selfie” with James Madison, often called the Father of the Constitution.
Constitution Day was the brainchild of Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia who always carried a copy of the Constitution with him and was emphatic about making Constitution Day events a requirement for organizations that receive federal funds.
Individuals, families, school groups and civic organizations are invited to visit the free exhibit that runs until September 22.
